Time-Lapse photography is one of my favorite types of content creation, but since receiving my Genie Mini from Syrp, I’ve been able to add motion to my time-lapses and oh boy does it make a difference!
The Genie Mini is a lightweight time-lapse and video motion controller that you control using an app on your phone over bluetooth and is capable of rotating a full 360 degrees in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.
This rad little device is small and lightweight, making it perfect to slip into your pocket wherever you go and is compatible with DSLR’s, GoPro’s, Smartphones and Tablets that are up to 4kg’s in weight.
There is even an additional connection on the Genie Mini itself that allows you to plug into another Genie Mini so you can add tilt to your panning video, time-lapse as well as their most recently added feature, Pano’s! Think Gigapan, but way more compact.
No additional batteries are required for the Genie Mini because it has a built in battery that takes 3 hours to charge and can control a time-lapse for 48 hours and video for up to 5 hours on a full charge. If you happen to to run out of battery while in the field, simply plug in a portable battery pack with a long cable and you’re good to go.
The motor inside the Genie Mini is really awesome and allows a full 360 at 33 seconds when on it’s maximum speed, but if you’re using it for video, be sure to add your own sound in post as it does make a bit of noise when it’s rotating. It is silent enough to not be picked up in any external mic’s you might be using.

My thoughts on this rad little motion controller are that it is a really cool device for adding smooth motion to your time-lapses and video, just make 100% sure you’ve always got it charged and that the firmware is always up to date!
To update the Genie Mini, simply connect it to your phone once you’ve updated the app and it will let you know that there is a firmware update ready to be installed.
