The 2025 Corona Cero Open J-Bay was a proper vibe this year with some of the worlds best surfers showing off some of their best moves on what is regarded as the Worlds Best Wave at Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay.
I have never had an opportunity to try my hand at photographing surfers ripping through waves, so I thought “why not take some extra gear with me for the weekend”.
When I say “some”, I went all out to test out some new gear from Sony, as well as some of my regular gear.
Here’s all the Gear I took with me to the 2025 Corona Cero Open J-Bay:
- Sony A7RV (for photos)
- Sony A9iii (for photos)
- Sony A1ii (for photos and video)
- Sony A7Siii (for video)
- Sony FE400-800 f/6.3 – f/8 G
- Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM
- Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM
- Sony 2 X extender
Since I was in J-Bay as part of the Corona Creator Network, I was also there to create some lifestyle content, so for that I was using my A7Siii for video and A7RV for images with a mix of 24-70mm and 70-200mm shots.
Those two lenses and bodies are my go to for pretty much EVERYTHING!
But for capturing all the surfing action of the Corona Cero Open J-Bay 2025, I was shooting on the brand new Sony 400-800mm f/6.3-f/8 G Lens on either the A9iii or A1ii.
I tried shooting with the 2 X extender too, making the lens an 800-1,600mm, but that doubles the aperture too, so I only used it for a handful of photos before putting it away because let’s face it, 800mm was more than enough anyway.
Here are some of my favourite photos captured at the Corona Cero Open J-Bay 2025
